What is SAP & What Do They Do?

SAP stands for Systems Applications and Products in Data Processing. SAP was founded in 1972 by Wellenreuther, Hopp, Hector, Plattner, and Tschira in Germany. SAP software products are instrumental in helping companies manage their financials, logistics, human resources, and other business areas. SAP is the world’s #1 leader in ERP and the 3rd largest software company in the world with an annual sales of $27.4 billion. As of 2010, SAP has more than 140,000 installations worldwide, over 25 industry-specific business areas and more than 75,000 customers in 120 countries. It is estimated that 70 percent of the world's transactions touch an SAP system. The majority of SAP’s revenue derives from cloud and software business solutions.

SAP's Future

Moving SAP To The Cloud

The Cloud has made it possible for users to access data, applications, and services over the Internet. The cloud eliminates the need for costly hardware, such as hard drives and servers. Recent trends indicate that over 90% of businesses are already using cloud technologies in a public, private or hybrid cloud environment. SAP in the past focused on on-premise solutions where applications were developed locally on the customer’s location. With the growing demand of businesses wanting to run via the cloud; SAP needed to rethink their current line of business applications and redesign them for the cloud. SAP began to develop a brand new set of business applications called “Fiori”.
